  2. UFO Update

  4. Anonymous low-level informants have for years accused the U.S. 
  5. government of hiding crashed UFOs.  Since these sources are of  
  6. uncertain reliability, the reports have been largely ignored.  
  7. Now, however, ufologists must consider the testimony of Robert 
  8. Sarbacher, whose entry in WHO'S WHO consists of more than 3     
  9. inches of tiny print, including education at Princeton and  
  10. Harvard and a stint as dean of the graduate school of the Georgia 
  11. Institute of Technology.  In the years after WWII, the story  
  12. goes, Sarbacher served as a science consultant for the Defense 
  13. Department's Joint Research and Development Board.  He was in 
  14. his Washington office on September 15, 1950, it seems, when he 
  15. received a visit from Canadian electrical engineer Wilbert B.  
  16. Smith.  According to information released by Smith just recently, 
  17. it was then that Sarbacher revealed the existence of crashed  
  18. UFOs, apparently under investigation by Vannevar Bush, the  
  19. government's top scientist.

  21. In a recent interview, Sarbacher, now head of the Washington  
  22. Institute of Technology, confirmed those remarks.  He says  
  23. that during his period of government service as one of a  
  24. number of government scientists who served largely as  
  25. volunteers, he was told that the vehicles were composed of an  
  26. "extremely light and very tough" material, apparently intended  
  27. to withstand tremendous acceleration and deceleration.  At one  
  28. point, Sarbacher says, he was even invited to a meeting at  
  29. Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio, where officials  
  30. related their findings to scientists connected with the Research  
  31. and Development Board.  Sarbacher had other commitments and did  
  32. not attend the meeting, but he says that those who did, including  
  33. Bush and noted mathematician John von Neumann, were told that the  
  34. vehicles appeared to be spaceships from another solar system.

  36. Asked about his reaction to the episode, Sarbacher seems oddly  
  37. blase.  He admits he hasn't given much thought to a matter most 
  38. people would consider extraordinary -- he considers it simply a 
  39. curious event in the course of a long scientific career.  "After 
  40. all," he says, "I had -- and have -- a great many more pressing 
  41. scientific responsibilities.  I wish I could refer you to someone 
  42. who was more directly involved than I was," he adds.   
  43. "Unfortunately, they're all long gone."

  45. Writer William Moore, who has been chasing government UFO secrets 
  46. for years, considers Sarbacher's testimony significant.  "It's  
  47. the first time someone with a reputation has come forward to  
  48. state publicly that the Pentagon has a recovered UFO," he says. 
  49. "This isn't proof, of course, but it fits in with information we 
  50. have from other sources."  Informed of these claims, Temple  
  51. University history professor David M. Jacobs, author of THE  
  52. UFO CONTROVERSY IN AMERICA, admits Sarbacher's credentials are 
  53. impressive but observes, "Until somebody can produce an actual 
  54. crashed saucer, this is hearsay evidence.  And how can he talk  
  55. so casually about something that would have to be the most  
  56. sensational event in all of history?"
